Cerknica Lake

Among the natural wonders to be experienced repeatedly in the Green Karst, Lake Cerknica is of particular importance. In the dry part of the year, you can see meadows and fields, which turn into the largest lake in Slovenia in spring and autumn. You can paddle and fish, mow the grass or walk in the same place.

Cerknica Lake is one of the largest intermittent lakes in Europe. Already in the 17th century, it was described in detail by Janez Vajkard Valvasor. Today, the lake is listed as a Ramsar wetland and Natura 2000 site. More than 270 species of birds, 45 species of mammals, 125 species of diurnal butterflies and 15 species of amphibians can be observed here.

Visiting Lake Cerknica is always a new adventure. Row or cycle, walk the learning trails or go birdwatching. Take pictures of nature, listen to the stories of the locals and discover the secrets of this unusual lake.
