Getting to the Green Karst

The Green Karst is well connected with Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, as well as with the neighbouring countries of Italy and Croatia.

Postojna, the main transport hub of the Green Karst, is only 50 kilometres from Ljubljana and 60 kilometres from Koper on the Slovenian coast.

The easiest way to reach the Green Karst is via Slovenia’s A1 motorway, which connects Ljubljana with Koper. Exit at Unec, Postojna, or Razdrto. The main gateway to the region is Postojna, from where a network of well-maintained regional roads leads to other towns: Cerknica, Pivka, Stari Trg pri Ložu, Nova vas, and Ilirska Bistrica.

Road conditions in Slovenia are generally good, with most roads to the Green Karst being paved and well signposted. During the winter months (from 15 November to 15 March), winter tyres or snow chains are mandatory. On motorways, a vignette is required, which can be purchased at petrol stations, border crossings, or online.

Speed limits in Slovenia:

  • Highway: 130km/h
  • Motorway: 110km/h
  • Regional roads: 90km/h
  • Urban areas: 50km/h

Electric vehicles and charging stations

The Green Karst region is increasingly equipped with  electric charging stations– in Postojna as well as in other towns (Pivka, Cerknica, Ilirska Bistrica).

You can easily reach the Green Karst by bus.

Postojna is the region’s main bus hub, with regular connections to Ljubljana (about 1 hour), Koper on the Slovenian coast (around 1 hour 15 minutes), and Trieste in Italy (45–60 minutes).

Buses also stop in other towns such as Cerknica, Pivka and Ilirska Bistrica. From the bus stations, you can continue your journey with local transfers, a taxi or a rental car.

Postojna, the main railway hub of the Green Karst, lies on the international railway line Vienna–Ljubljana–Trieste. These routes are also served by international trains, providing regular connections with major cities in Slovenia.

Postojna is well connected with Ljubljana (the journey takes about 1 hour) and with Koper (around 1 hour and 20 minutes).

For continuing your journey through the Green Karst, local train services are available, offering access to various towns in the region (Rakek, Prestranek, Pivka, Ilirska Bistrica, etc.) Some connections also allow bicycle transport.

Travelling by train across the Green Karst is comfortable and affordable. Many railway routes also offer picturesque views of the karst landscape.

Slovenia

  • Ljubljana Airport (Jože Pučnik – LJU)
    Slovenia’s main airport is about 70km from Postojna. From here you can reach the Green Karst by rental car, bus, or train via Ljubljana. The journey takes around 1 hour.

Croatia

  • Zagreb Airport (ZAG) is about 200 km from Postojna, with a 2-hour drive on the motorway.
    You can also arrive via Rijeka Airport (RJK), which is about 65km from Ilirska Bistrica or 90km from Postojna.

 Italy

  • Trieste Airport (TRS): the nearest international airport, just 75km from Postojna or about a 1-hour drive.
  • Venice Airport (VCE): around 185km from Postojna, approximately 2 hours by car.
  • Treviso Airport (TSF): about 180km from Postojna.


All airports offer options for car rentals, bus connections, and train services.

Getting around

When in the Green Karst, you’ll want to explore it thoroughly! You can reach your destinations by rental car, taxi or arranged shuttle, as well as by local bus and train connections.
In some towns, special city services are available – such as the free Furman city bus in Postojna and the affordable TIC BUS in Ilirska Bistrica.
