Planina Field

Planina Field is one of the most beautiful karst fields in Slovenia. During high water, it is overflowed by the Unica River and other tributaries. In a few days it turns into a large lake, and when the water recedes, it's meadows and fields again.

The plain is flooded several times a year. With a water surface of 11km2, it is one of the largest intermittent lakes in Slovenia. Many rare plants and birds are attracted by the transformations of the environment.

The plain can be explored in more detail on a hike along the Scilka learning trail, named after the amethyst meadow squill (Scilla litardierei), an endangered plant that only grows in Slovenia on Planina Field. You can start your journey at Ravbar tower, in Planina, Laze or Grčarevec.
