Pivka Disappearing Lakes
In the Pivka Valley, water creates 17 lakes, which disappear again after a few weeks or months. The largest is Lake Palčje, and the most durable is Lake Petelinje, where water lasts up to 9 months. Lakes are habitats for many rare plants, amphibians and birds.
You can observe the lakes from viewpoints and hiking trails. When the water subsides through many sinkholes into the karst underground, the landscape takes on a different appearance. It is therefore worth returning to the lakes at different times of the year.
